It is coming around to that time of year again when we can get out to the Farne Islands to take pictures of the Atlantic Puffin and other seabirds. The seabirds are returning to the Farne Islands where they will breed again. The Borders are a stronghold for these beautiful birds who have the nickname “Peewit” Since the 1940s lapwing declines have been driven by large-scale changes to farming. Large areas of grassland were converted to arable, marginal land was drained and improved, and chemicals were introduced for fertilizers and pest control with increasing reliance on them. I have been to the cauld (weir) at Melrose on the River Tweed many times, its a great place for dippers and wagtails. But every time I go there I look around the banks and see otter spraint around area on the rocks. I have been going back many times with the hope I will see one of the River Tweed otters close enough to get some pictures of one.
