Red Grouse in close up

These are some close ups of the red grouse up on the Lammermuir Hills in the Borders region of Scotland. These are one of my favorite birds, they have bags of character and are always a pleasure to watch. They seem to have had a good breeding year so there are quite a few around. Here are a few of the...

Reeve near Stichill, Kelso, Scottish Borders

There has been a lot of rain recently, the stubble fields around the area are very wet and in some cases are starting to flood. The identification was kindly confirmed by Graham Bell who is leading ornithologist and chairman of the North Northumberland Bird Club. We...

I got into the hide at first light and could hear the kingfisher calling at the corner of the pool and it took almost three hours before the bird came close enough to the hide to get an...

The Curlew and the Crow

I was at Leighton Moss RSPB in Lancashire last week on my way back home form visiting friends The light was very poor and it turned out to be  waste of time because of the light. I sat for about four hours waiting for something to happen, and not much did, with the exception of the curlew and the crow. The curlew was feeding in the water, he was searching for crabs under the banks of one of the islands. Eventually it found a crab and was trying to eat it when this crow came down and tried to steal the crab, the crow gave up quite quickly and landed on the island. The curlew continued to eat...
