Barn Owl’s in trouble again?

Last winter the barn owl took a beating from the weather, the population dropped dramatically over the cold months. It was hoped that they could make a good recovery during the breeding season in 2010, and to an extent I think they did quite well. Today is New Years Eve (or Old Years Night as they say locally) and December was the coldest on record, with temperatures reaching -18°c locally, again the barn owl is under pressure. Grey Partridge

There has been a grey partridge breeding program running for a number of years here in the Borders. Their numbers have been on the increase steadily over the last two years. Their presence this last six months has been noticeable, with coveys reaching 20 in number. These are a few of the pictures I took today………….

Christmas Eve on the Lammermuir HIlls at Longformacus continued…….

It was a brilliant sunny day with plenty of lying snow, I had taken some landscape pictures and now it was time to find the illusive mountain hare. I have been up on the Lammermuir Hills six times this winter trying to find them and have managed only three sightings. In addition I came across a lone fieldfare feeding on berries in a hawthorn tree which was performing well and also found some lone grouse trying to find food in the deep snow on the lower slopes. I was put early in the morning and got some pictures of the red grouse in the sunrise which produced some lovely shades in the snow....

The snow covered Lammermuir Hills, Borders Region, Scotland

I don’t normally take landscapes, but I was up on the Lammermuir Hills on Christmas Eve looking for mountain hares, and the scenery was stunning, so I got the 17 – 85 lens out and started snapping away. Here are some of the pictures. The mountain hares come on the next post.
