Mountain Hares at in the Borders at Longformacus
Last year I managed to find a group of mountain hares after three weeks of looking for them in the deep snow and managed some reasonable pictures With the snowy weather this week I have been up on the Lammermuir Hills near to Longformacus in the Borders looking for mountain hares again. The snow has been with us for about five days now and I was hoping to see the hares in the classic white fur. After a couple of days searching I finally came across the first of this year. It was in a small plantation, it ran about for a short time before hiding behind a small conifer. Not quite the white...

We had our first fall of snow today, considerable amounts fell across the eastern Borders. The wind turned and came from the north overnight bringing the snow, six inches fell by mid-day. So I had a run out to see if I could find some fieldfares and perhaps a redwing or two. I headed towards Duns via the back lanes. Eventually I found a small flock feeding on a hawthorn bush. Some ore picture from the Lammermuir Hills near Longformacus. These are different views of these jaunty birds. They are another bird which had a hard time last winter during the very cold spell, but have made a comeback during a very successful breeding season this spring. Again I am seeing large covey’s of the birds flying around the Lammermuir Hills.

As I waited a kestrel came into view and hovered for a few minutes, the sun was lighting it up and I took the opportunity to get these images. The bird was hovering at eye level but at about seventy feet high. I use the 500mm f4 lens to get the images. Thanks for looking

The common buzzard is a bird I find difficult to get decent pictures of. I can usually get a couple of frames but he little devils will never stay long enough. I had such an encounter with one on the Lammermuir Hills yesterday. The buzzard sat fore a few seconds and then flew off, they always fly away from you never towards you hence the pictures of its rear end. Ah well, perhaps next time.
