A day out at the coast

I had some report of waxwings in the area around Aberlady Bay on the Forth Estuary southern coast line. After checking the weather report and seeing good sunshine I decided to go to see if I could get pictures of them. I missed them last year after a bumper ear the year before. The report from Rare Bird Alert said there was 175 waxwings at Gullane near the fire station. I arrived at first light and started to search for the birds, I searched for over two hours but could not locate them. So went to the car park at Aberlady Bay near the footbridge and had a cup of coffee and a custard creme or...

Red Deer on the Isle of Mull – Rutting time

I have been on the Isle of Mull all week looking for the red deer rut. The deer where all around and as the day ended they could be heard roaring as the rut took place. The challenge was to find them during daylight hours roaring and fighting. I concentrated on the south side of the island, Grasspoint, Pennyghael, and Carsaig. I encountered  most of the deer I came across in these areas. Grasspoint was the main site and in particular Achnacraig. I visited the same sites every day. the best day for seeing action was Monday 18th. I arrived at Grasspoint in the dark around 0645. The deer where...
