These pictures are of a Black Woodpecker taken on the trip to Finland a couple of year ago. The pictures were taken near to the nest site as the bird came and went frequently.

I was in Berwick upon Tweed this afternoon, the weather was wild an windy with big seas in the area. I was looking through some pictures from a trip I took to Finland a couple of years ago. The blog wasn’t up an running then, so I thought would post some of the pictures from the trip from time to time. The trip was one of our annual trips that our little group takes every year. This one was to Olou in central Finland and was led by Finnature, our guide was Harri Tarvetti, himself an accomplished wildlife photographer. I was again out looking for Brown Hares, I have been looking for them for some time. I have been trying to find groups of them to get a chance of seeing them boxing. I can only find singles or pairs, I really want to fond a group of 5 pr 6 including 2 0r 3 does to fight off the amorous bucks. I dont know to much about hares and cannot work out whether they are still lying low due to the continuous freezing weather or whether the big freeze has killed them off. I suppose time will tell. These are the pictures from today. The bottom two are in the late afternoon sunlight

I was out this morning, again trying to locate some brown hares for future photography, the sun was shinning after some overnight snow, the light was excellent. While is was sitting watching some hares, this yellowhammer came and sat on a small branch briefly quite near to me and I managed to get this shot before it moved on.
